The Mike’s Math Club Team met Sarah Fried 16 years ago when she was a sixth-grade student at Mar Vista Elementary School. Her mother, a pre-kindergarten teacher at Grand View Boulevard Elementary School, nurtured her daughter’s love of teaching by encouraging her to become a teacher. Ms. Fried graduated from Loyola Marymount University in 2003 and taught third grade at Shenandoah Street Elementary School for four years before accepting the challenge of teaching a second-grade class in the 2007-2008 school year.
Mike’s Math Club is thrilled to have our former student as one of our teachers. This will be her third year as a teacher in our program, and she seems to enjoy our math lessons more than ever, as her description of one of our visits indicates.
"I really believe I had an even better time than the kids did! It’s wonderful to see how they light up when you’re here. I can literally see a glow in their faces! Even the most timid children, whether they’re naturally quiet or are quiet because they struggle academically, seem to transform right before my eyes. Suddenly, they’re not only completely engaged in the lesson, but are actively participating and interacting with other students in ways that I seldom get to witness." |
